February 2011 Hypnosis and Gene Expression 6:30 pm

February 25, 2011  Oregon Society of Clinical Hypnosis, OHSU Dental School, Portland, OR 6:30- 9:00 pm. CONSIDERING HYPNOSIS AND BEHAVIORAL EPIGENETICS: HOW UNCONSCIOUS COMMUNICATION MIGHT INFLUENCE GENE EXPRESSION Hypnosis allows access to and direct communication with that poorly defined entity we call the unconscious. Trance phenomena and well documented evidence of hypnotic interventions reveal how the unconscious is capable of exercising influence from the molecular to the psychological, from the neurological to the perceptual, from the emotional to the behavioral and more. When the symptoms of genetically driven disorders quickly remit as a result of specific unconscious communication, the notion of genes being silenced seems a reasonable consideration. The field of epigenetics investigates what influences gene expression. Behavioral epigenetics examines how behavior is influenced by gene expression and what clinical practices might influence gene expression. Case examples will illustrate how hypnosis may be a primary force in behavioral epigenetics. Experiential exercises will introduce participants to essential neuro-biological communication which allows the clinician to safely access information about physiological process.

Clinical Applications of Essential Neurobiological Communication for Eating Disorder Treatment

Four workshops at the Kartini Clinic, Portland, OR

I. March 12, 2011  9:00 am- 5:00 pm Kartini Clinic, Portland, Oregon

Effective Management of Anxiety and Depression in the Eating Disordered using Essential Neurobiological Communication

Abstract:

Anxiety and depression are common co-morbid conditions seen with eating disorder treatment. This presentation poses an effective means of treating and managing anxiety and depression as well as resolving source material and past emotion driving these conditions. Through lecture and experiential exercises participants will be introduced to essential neurobiological communication or ENBC and the Goldfinger method. ENBC can safely access deep levels of neurobiological functioning and communication complementary to healthy functioning. Essential to the Goldfinger model is a progressive ratification sequence intended to ground emotional adjustments in thought and behavior. A questioning tree illustrates a Socratic means of emotional inquiry. This brief procedure is a useful adjunct  to other treatment modalities and instrumental in clarifying the focus of treatment.  If circumstances permit, the audience will view a live demonstration with a volunteer.

HOW HYPNOSIS CAN BE EMPLOYED TO  ESTABLISH A REALISTIC BODY IMAGE IN THE EATING DISORDERED

A one day workshop

ABSTRACT

A driving force in an eating disorder like anorexia nervosa is a distorted body image. When successful treatment allows for the effective management of eating disorder thoughts and behaviors, body image is often the last thing to change, if it changes at all. The psychobiological dynamics of eating disorders engage significant hypnotic phenomena such as various forms of dissociation, hallucination, time distortion and catalepsy. This poses hypnosis as a good fit for particular parts of treatment. Presented here is an overview of four hypnotic approaches designed to establish of a reality-based body image or destabilize a distorted body image in the eating disordered individual, over a relatively brief treatment sequence. Conditional prerequisites for application of these interventions are described and case examples  illustrate each approach. A discussion on some of the rationale for formulating these strategies is offered.

UTILIZATION SOBRIETY:

INCORPORATING ESSENTIAL NEUROBILOLGICAL COMMUNICATION FOR BRIEF INDIVIDUALIZED SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT

A one day workshop

ABSTRACT:

This approach is especially useful when substance use coincides as a co-morbid feature of eating disorder treatment. This presentation poses a substance abuse treatment which acknowledges and accommodates the personal needs being addressed by substance use, bypasses perceived resistance and employs idiosyncratic psycho-biological learning to achieve a body-mind gestalt complementary to the client’s sobriety. Client self-empowerment and relapse prevention are built into the intervention and it allows for painless withdrawal. This method develops a safe framework for addressing any subsequent mental health themes directly of indirectly related to substance misuse. A simple form of body-mind communication conceptualized as essential  neurobiological communication is employed in this procedure. Fundamental information applicable to all levels of professional experience will be provided.

Eating with your genes off? Rapid eating disorder remission and its implications for behavioral epigenetics

A one day workshop

Abstract:

Recent scientific investigation says much about the genetic substrate of eating disorders. Epigenetics attempts to understand what conditions influence the expression of a gene. This presentation provides an overview of the blossoming field of epigenetics and its clinical implications  for behavioral epigenetics and eating disorder treatment. Specific clinical interventions resulting in rapid remission of the eating disorder symptom complex and successfully applied to no less than thirty five people are described and conceptualized  as behavioral epigenetics.  Experiential exercises will introduce participants to essential neuro-biological communication  which allows the clinician to safely access information about physiological process in the client. Because this is a relatively new strategy and field of practice, fundamental information applicable to all levels of professional experience will be provided.

*The Renfrew Center Foundation presents the 19th Annual Renfrew Center Foundation Conference for Professionals, Feminist Perspectives and Beyond: The Art and Science of Eating Disorders Treatment. This is a four day seminar for behavioral health professionals and dietitians and offers 22.5 CEUs. The event is taking place at the Philadelphia Airport Marriott, Philadelphia, PA from November 12 - 15, 2009. In the past, the efforts of dedicated clinicians and researchers have contributed to significant progress in the treatment of eating disorders. The task ahead is perhaps less a search for major new breakthroughs and more a determined pursuit of refinement and integration. The 2009 Renfrew Center Foundation Conference is dedicated to exploring the therapeutic challenge of learning how to make more effective use of what we already know. Keynote Speakers: Joan Borysenko, PhD; Daniel Siegel, MD; Panel Presentation with William Davis, PhD, Carolyn Costin, MFT, James Lock, MD and Kathryn Zerbe, MD.  Among the many topics: Understanding and Treating EDNOS; Integrating Evidence-Based Interventions and Relational Therapies; Adapting Therapeutic Techniques to the Changing Clinical Picture; Overcoming Shame; Providing Motivation and Skills to Help Therapists and Clients Move Beyond Their “Comfort Zones;” Combining Different Treatment Models to Enhance Outcome; Effective ways to address Exercise Issues; Coached Meals; Mindfulness; Neurobiology and Therapist Self-Care.
